Alphabet CEO says company is well positioned in AI field, as analysts say ChatGPT has reached 100 million users
Google will make its technology chatbot publicly available in the "coming weeks and months" in response to the success of ChatGPT, a Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence chatbot that has become a global phenomenon after becoming available for free.
Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google's owner Alphabet, said the use of AI had reached an "inflection point" and the company was "in a very good position" on the ground.
Pichai refers to two so-called large language models developed by the company, LaMDA and PaLM, with the former set to be released soon. This week CNBC reported that Google had started testing an AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT called Apprentice Bard, which uses LaMDA technology.
LaMDA shot to prominence last year when Google suspended and then laid off an engineer after he went public with claims that LaMDA is “alive”. Google says Blake Lemoine's claims about LaMDA – an acronym for a language model for dialogue apps are “completely unfounded”.
Pichai said in a conference call with Alphabet investors on Thursday that: "In the coming weeks and months, we will be providing models for this language, starting with LaMDA so people can engage with it right away."
Major language models like LaMDA and the one behind ChatGPT are a type of neural network that mimics the underlying architectural style of the brain in the form of a computer being given large amounts of text to teach how to construct a sentence that makes sense. ChatGPT became a sensation after being used to create everything from school essays to job applications.
Pichai indicated that the chatbot technology will be integrated into Google as part of the rollout. “Soon, people will be able to use or interact directly with our most powerful new language model chatbot as a companion in exploring experimental and innovative ways,” he said. Last year Google released a series of LaMDA demos, available to small groups, as part of its "AI Test Kitchen".
He also marked the achievements of Alphabet's UK-based AI unit DeepMind by saying its database of "all 200 million proteins known to science are used by 1 million biologists around the world".
Analysts have estimated that ChatGPT, developed by San Francisco-based company OpenAI, has reached 100 million users since ChatGPT launched on November 30. Describing the unprecedented growth, analysts at investment bank UBS wrote: "In the next 20 years of the internet space, we can't recall a faster increase in consumer internet applications."
Microsoft, one of OpenAI's financial backers, is integrating ChatGPT into its product and has already launched a premium version of its Teams communications product, offering AI-powered extras such as automatically generated meeting notes. Microsoft is also expected to deploy OpenAI's artificial intelligence model on its Bing search engine.
ChatGPT is an example of generative AI, or technology trained on vast quantities of text and images that can create content from a simple text prompt. OpenAI has also been developed by Dall-E, an AI-powered image generator.
Michael Wooldridge, a professor of computer science at the University of Oxford, said OpenAI had "put a firework" under big tech companies with the release of ChatGPT.
"They achieved that with the lowest number of big tech companies' employees, which must have led to a concentration in Silicon Valley boardrooms," he said. "My guess is that we will see a big pivot within other big tech companies towards big language models and generative AI - and this rush is frantic to get the product to market and secure the user base."
